“So she’s not going to go home with you, then?” Georgie asked Charlie after he finished his tale.
“Nope,” he replied. “Sorry.”
“Hey, lucky me…”
“Hey, wait a minute,” said Jenny.
“I’m just offering her a bed for the night.”
“Yeah, I can see that. I know what you’re offering here.”
“So why not?” Georgie asked. “Why not, huh?”
“First off,” Jenny asked Tia, “are you?”
“Am I what?” Tia asked.
“Are you really going to sleep with someone you never met right after getting shot at and seeing someone you were with go down? I don’t know about you, but most people, that’s just pushing things a bit.”
“Some people like to live, you know,” said Georgie.
“That fast? That quick? You one of them?” Jenny asked Tia.
“So what are you gonna do then, huh?” Georgie asked her.
“First,” said Jenny, “we keep low for a few hours, until dawn. That’s a good time for Tomo to ping the ERCs and figure out what happened to your friend.”
“Kate,” said Tia.
“Yeah, see what happened to her. If we can we figure out what to do then.”
“What to do?” asked Tomo.
“Yeah, I mean, what to do with Tia here. Tia,” she asked her, “who knows you went over to the other side like this?”
“What do you mean?” she asked.
“Is there like, someone who might miss you enough to pony up a ransom?”
“Uh… no, sorry.”
“So if you disappear,” Jenny asked, “no one back in Toronto would notice you’re gone?”
“Which means, you’re maybe one of the stupidest people I’ve ever met. You going over a hostile border with no one waiting up for you? What, you wanted to die here?”
“So you are going to kill me, then?”
“What? Hey, I have to make a living, y’know? I got to find an angle and a profit in it, and if I just kill you for no reason, what’s the point? Geez, give me some credit.”
“So if you’re not going to do anything with her body-” Georige started to say.
“And if she tries anything,” Jenny interrupted, “I’m more likely to act first and keep it from going anywhere. I don’t kill unless I need to, and doing something really f’n’ stupid counts towards that.”
After a few moments of silence, Dutch asked, “So, your place first, Jenny?”
“Yeah, the two of us are getting out there. Let me know what you find in the morning, Tomo, when we get together.”
“We still going out?” Tomo asked.
“Hey, we got to work, right?”
“And what about Tia?”
“Yeah, that’s going to be interesting,” Jenny grumbled…
