“She’s what?” Charlie asked, looking back and forth between Jenny and Tia as they gout out the car.
“I said, she’s doing a ride-along,” said Jenny. “Gets to watch, see what we do, get stuff for her story. And she knows, full well, that if she f’s things up for us, we get to shoot her and dump her overboard.”
Charlie looked at her, dumbfounded.
“Okay, if it’ll make you happy, you get to shoot her.”
He just shook his head and walked over to the boat, taking the line Georgie had just coiled after securing it to the bow cleat.
While Charlie held the line as Tomo and Dutch backed the trailer into the lake and floated her, Georgie came up to Jenny and asked in a low voice, “What the hell made you think taking her along was a good idea?”
“I just went with Shaun’s advice, what he’d say in a case like this: Go with your gut and be ready to improvise.”
“And this was the best you could come up with?”
“Like I was going to leave her unattended,” said Jenny. “Lock her in my room with the girls sharing my place was a bad idea, especially if she suddenly panicked and decided try and make a run for it. And even if she’s here illegally and not likely to call in anyone, those two were going to get suspicious about the new person, and that could have gone bad. And I wasn’t going to have her stuck with Nana; that just wasn’t going to happen.”
“I don’t suppose Shaun was an option.”
“Please; like I’d just give him a reason to misbehave.”
“Yeah, I guess,” Georgie strained. “I could see him boarding her if he thought he could get away with it.”
“Or didn’t care anymore.”
“Yeah, even more likely since he stopped leaving the house after what Big Bobby did. Any sign of progress?”
“Maybe I’m spoiling him,” said Jenny. “I come over, he gets some booty, why’d he want to give up any of that?”
“So how much do we still need him in the crew, then?”
“He’s got his uses still. There’s a lot left he can teach, and because he’s able to take a step back and not be up to his neck in it he can see something we might not.”
“We’re ready to go here,” said Tomo. “You all set, you two?”
“Three of us,” said Jenny, looking at Tia. “You, you’re astern with me to port.”
“Your left?” Tia replied.
“See?” Jenny said to Tomo, “if she can get that, why can’t you?”
“Bite mine,” she replied as she put a second loaded magazine in her front vest pocket…
